Welcome to our review of the Drive Medical Medalist 450. If you are interested in the Drive Medical Medalist 450, we have some valuable information below about this product that you should know about. We feel that the EZ Lite Cruiser is the best electric wheelchairs because they are light weight, compact, easy to use and very affordable when compared to the Drive Medical Medalist 450 and it's offerings.
The Drive Medical Medalist 450 is a heavy duty power wheelchair. Because it is made for users which way more, it is extremely heavy and therefore quite durable. It is definitely one of the heaviest we've researched, even among heavy duty electric wheelchairs. However, there is nothing that makes this electric wheelchair any better or different than most of the other bulkier, older style powered wheelchairs. It has the standard features such as a footplate than can b e flipped up out of the way, and flip up arm rests so you can easily get into and out of it. The controller can be mounted on the left or right hand side, as with most electric wheelchairs that boast about any types of features. These are all great features and when you're spending nearly three thousand dollars on a powered wheelchair, you expect to get these features. The biggest disadvantage the Drive Medical Medalist 450 has is that is it's awful weight. You will definitely need to spend a few hundred dollars on a lift, and have it installed on your car or SUV. The total cost of ownership is going to be well into the three thousand plus dollar range.
Let's get into the specifics of the parameters of the Drive Medical Medalist 450. This device weighs approximately 288 pounds (130.6 kilograms) with battery. The overall size of the unit is 41 inches x 24.5 inches x 25 inches (104.1 centimeters x 62.2 centimeters x 63.5 centimeters) and it can not be folded. The Drive Medical Medalist 450 is available in a 22 inch (55.9 centimeter) or 24 inch (61 centimeters) seat size, to accommodate larger folks. Because of its larger size, the turn radius is about 31 inches (78.7 centimeters.)
Now in terms of speed, you can get up to driving at about 4 miles per hour (6.5 kilometers per hour) and continue to drive for up to 10 miles, depending on weight of the individual, terrain, tire pressure and battery charge/condition. Because of it's extremely heavy weight, the motor hardly has much power left to drive up and down inclines, and it is not ideal for ramps greater than a 5 degree incline/decline. Also due to it's extremely heavy weight, this device will require a car lift. Most people, even with reasonable upper body strength, will not be able to lift it without support of a car lift. Since it can not be folded, it can not be stored in a car/SUV trunk, but it will fit in the corner of a room.
The Drive Medical Medalist 450 boasts a very durable frame which can carry passengers up to 450 pounds (204.1 kilograms), and this is due to the fact that the device is a staggering 288 pounds (130.6 kilograms.) Depending on where it is purchased, it may come pre-assembled. Most times some assembly is required and a toolkit may be required. The Drive Medical Medalist 450 accomplishes most indoor mobility requirements. Some doorways and hallways may be tight to fit through because of its size and turn radius. Handles simple outdoor mobility fairly, such as paved sidewalks & flat surfaces, but may be limited as to the terrains it can roll on. Testimonials are mixed. Some of the biggest complaints from customers is the size, weight and cost.
